NFPA 30 · Chemical Storage
01 Chemical distribution warehouse
Challenge
A national chemical distributor operating a high hazard flammable and combustible liquids storage facility needed a comprehensive NFPA 30 compliance assessment. The existing fire protection infrastructure had been installed at various times over the building's history, and the client required certainty about whether current operations aligned with the applicable edition of NFPA 30 and related standards before renewing insurance coverage.
Approach
DGA Consulting conducted a full site survey including hazard classification of stored products, container and packaging configuration analysis, rack storage geometry verification, and existing sprinkler system evaluation. The engagement included review of maximum quantities per control area, spill containment provisions, and ventilation requirements. Findings were cross referenced against NFPA 30 (current adopted edition), FM Global Data Sheet 7-29, and the applicable state building code.
Outcome
Delivered a sealed compliance report identifying the specific areas where existing conditions diverged from current code, prioritized by risk severity, with recommended corrective measures for each. The report was accepted by the client's insurance underwriter and used as the basis for a phased remediation plan.
GSA Form 12000
02 Federal office building
Challenge
A federal agency occupying a historic office building in Lower Manhattan required a Form 12000 inspection and certification letter to support continued tenant occupancy. The building combined modern fire protection systems with legacy infrastructure, and recent code updates had introduced requirements the space had not previously been evaluated against.
Outcome
Produced a completed Form 12000 package and sealed certification letter accepted by federal reviewers. Identified deficiencies were categorized by severity, with recommendations that allowed tenant occupancy to continue while a longer-term remediation plan was developed. The engagement was completed within the timeline required for the agency's occupancy milestones.
Approach
DGA Consulting conducted an on site inspection covering sprinkler, standpipe, fire alarm, and life safety systems. The firm coordinated directly with federal fire protection reviewers during the review cycle and addressed comments through supplementary documentation rather than requiring additional site visits.
NFPA 13 · HVAC Review
03 Cereal manufacturing facility
Challenge
A large food manufacturing plant planned significant HVAC system modifications that would have required expensive sprinkler system reconfiguration under a straightforward application of NFPA 13. The client needed an engineering evaluation to determine whether the existing sprinkler coverage, including a legacy preaction zone, could remain as designed documented hydraulic performance, continued to meet the applicable design requirements under the modified HVAC conditions.
Approach
DGA Consulting performed a pre-action design area evaluation referencing NFPA 13 Chapter 20 (Special Occupancy Requirements) and specifically the design area increase provisions for preaction systems. The firm developed an engineering basis demonstrating that the existing system, with documented hydraulic performance, continued to meet the applicable design requirements under the modified HVAC conditions.
Outcome
Delivered a sealed engineering report that justified maintaining the existing sprinkler configuration. The client avoided a substantial sprinkler reconfiguration cost and moved forward with the HVAC project on its original schedule. The report served as the engineering basis for AHJ acceptance of the approach.
Fire Protection Design · Medical Manufacturing
04 Medical device manufacturing campus
A medical device manufacturer planned a significant building addition to an existing campus. Fire protection for the new facility needed to integrate with existing campus infrastructure, maintain service continuity for ongoing manufacturing operations, and meet both local code requirements and the company’s internal property protection standards.
DGA Consulting performed a capacity analysis of the existing water supply, fire pumps, and main distribution system to confirm they could support the new demand. The firm then developed an integration design for the new facility’s sprinkler, fire alarm, and suppression systems, coordinated with the campus wide infrastructure. The engagement included early coordination with the local AHJ to align on acceptable integration approaches.
Delivered a complete fire protection design package for the addition, including hydraulic calculations, equipment schedules, and coordination drawings. The design allowed the new facility to be brought online without service interruption to existing operations and was approved by the AHJ on first submission.
